The mistake gets further embedded, as a bad habit. It’s hard to get rid of bad habits—and the longer you wait to fix the bad habits, the worse they can get.
The student gets more discouraged. The joy of reading is lost. The student feels badly, often thinking that there’s something wrong with him or her, as a person. (“I’m stupid!”) Not only does the student’s reading ability suffer, but also self-esteem suffers. The student says, “I can’t read. I’m not a good reader.” And the student avoids reading.

But the truth is, the struggles are most likely in the method and content of the teaching. With the right instruction, methods, and successes—the student can read—and read well.

No More “Guessing”

One of the biggest errors in reading is “guessing.” Student who guess usually are trying to read whole words. But whole word reading is not correct reading. First and foremost, correct reading has to do with decoding. But if a student doesn’t fully “know the code,” then there’s nothing left to do but guess.

With True North Reading, in ways never taught before, your student fully and completely learns the “code” for English. There’s never a need to guess—for any word, ever.

Sounds are broken down into their Sound Pictures—the different letter combinations representing single sounds or sound groups. Sound Pictures make both reading (decoding words) and spelling simple.

Here are the Sound Pictures for the sound, /aw/:

“au” as in “Paul”
“aw” as in “law”
“o” as in “log”
“augh” as in “taught”
“ough” as in “bought”

Sound Pictures (letter combinations) are paired with their sounds from the start. For each sound, students learn Sound Signs—which are hand signals and movements much like American Sign Language. Sound Signs helps your student speak the sound correctly, decode faster, and remember and read the Sound Picture more readily. The phonologically based approach also means spelling is taught at the same time… making spelling is easier.

Here is the Sound Sign for /g/:

Sound Pictures are uniquely marked. The markings are visual cues, for how to pronounce the sound. The markings also help students learn the letter combinations “shared” by different sounds. For example, “ea” is one picture that’s shared among three sounds: A (great), E (bean), and /e/ (bread). Each Sound Picture is marked differently for each sound.

Here are the unique Sound Pictures for each “ea” sound:

as in “great” (taught within the Vowel Name Code)

as in “bean” (taught within the Vowel Name Code)

as in “bread” (taught within the Imposter Code)

Sound Pictures are grouped in easy-to-remember Sound Boxes—the “boxes” (specially arranged clusters or bundles of like Sound Pictures) help with memory, recall, and immediate use for decoding.

Here is Sound Box 8 from the Imposter Code:

Special games and activities help the student to use decoding correctly—“in and through the word”—so the student reads fluently and with understanding.

It’s a tried-and-true method of learning to read that’s fun and easy—and it works.

What a single word means: Increasing vocabulary, right from the start.
